strspn() In C

Purpose of strspn()

strspn() is one of the inbuilt string function in c programming which is used to find the count of similar characters in both string and escape when any one character of str1 does not matches the characters in str2.

How strspn() Works

The following diagram clearly illustrate the working principle of strspn() inbuilt string function in C.

strspn() in c

In the above diagram strspn() takes two parameters. Both parameters are string type. strspn() will search for first character of first string in second string. If any of a character in second string matches first character of a first string, then strspn() will increase the count by 1 and the process continues until it reach last character of a first string.

Syntax - strspn()

  • strspn() accepts two parameters.
  • Both parameters are string.
  • To use strspn() inbuilt string function in C, we need to declare #include<string.h> header file.
Syntax
strspn(str1, str2);

C Program - strspn()

Let us work through strspn() function, In the following program we will find the count of similar characters in both string and escape when any one character of str1 does not matches the characters in str2.

c-using-strspn.c
#include <stdio.h>
#include<string.h>
int main()
{
char str1[20] = "this is strspn";
char str2[20] = "this is string";
int len;
len = strspn(str1, str2);
printf("character of str1 and str2 differs @ %d", len);
return 0;
}
character of str1 and str2 differs @ 12

Note:

The above program defines the function strspn(), which prints the number of are characters in str1 matches str2.

C Program - Without strspn()

Let us find the count of similar characters in both string and escape when any one character of str1 does not matches the characters in str2 without using strspn() inbuilt string function.

c-without-strspn.c
#include <stdio.h>
#include<string.h>
int main()
{
char str1[20] = "this is strspn";
char str2[20] = "this is string";
int i, j, k = 0, m = 0;
for(i=0; str1[i]!= '\0'; i++)
{
for(j=0; str2[j]!='\0'; j++)
{
if(str1[i]==str2[j])
{
k++;
break;
}
else
k = 0;
}
if(k == 0)
break;
for(j=0; str2[j]!='\0'; j++)
{
if(str1[i]==str2[j])
{
m++;
break;
}
}
}
printf("character of str1 and str2 differs @ %d", m);
return 0;
}
character of str1 and str2 differs @ 12

Note:

The above program looks verbose but yields the same result.
