DC Motors

An Electric motor is a electric machine which converts electrical energy(Direct current) into mechanical energy.

Principle

DC motor is based on the principle that when a DC current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force whose direction is given by Fleming's Left-hand Rule. A Magnitude of force experienced by the conductor is given by F= BIL Newton.

Working

Basic constructional details of a DC motor is given above. When a DC supply is given to the conductor via split ring commutator. The conductor experience a force and it starts rotating. The direction of rotation of a conductor is given by Fleming's Left-hand Rule (generally, in anticlockwise direction).

Reversing DC motor rotation

The rotation of a DC motor can be easily reversed using two ways.

  • By interchange the terminal wires of a battery or supply.
  • By using bridge circuit e.g) L298N Dual H Bridge bridge
