DC Series Motors

In DC series motor, the field winding is connected in series with armature. The field winding should have less number of turns of thick wire. Here Rseries is the resistance of the series field winding. Normally Rseries value is very small in conventional DC series motor.

Advantages of DC Series Motor

  • Dc series motor have good accelerating torque.
  • Dc series motor have a relatively huge starting torques.
  • Dc series motor delivers high torque during an overload.
  • The dc series motor draws less current and power from the source compared to a shunt or compound motor.

Disadvantages of DC Series Motor

  • DC series motor have low speed when overloaded
  • DC series motor will attain a dangerous speed at low loads
  • Thus speed regulation in the dc series motor is quite poor.

Applications of DC Series Motor

  • In driving hoists, cranes, trams etc
  • DC series motor can be directly coupled to a load such as a fan whose torque increases with speed.
  • DC series motors are mostly used in electric trains, thus regenerative braking is possible.

Note:DC series motor is not suited for the application where load on the motor is completely removed.
