DC Shunt Motors

In a DC shunt motor, the field winding is connected across the armature. Here, the shunt field winding has more number of turns and less cross-sectional area. Rshunt is the shunt field winding resistance and Ra is the armature resistance. The value of Ra is very small and Rshunt is quite large. In DC shunt motor, the input voltage V is equal to the voltage across the armature and field winding.

Advantages of DC Shunt Motor

  • Speed of a dc shunt motor is sufficiently constant.

Disadvantages of DC Shunt motor

  • In dc shunt motor, for the same current input, its starting torque is not a high as that of dc series motor.

Applications of DC Shunt Motor

  • DC shunt motors are used in centrifugal pumps.
  • DC shunt motors are used in Machine tools such as lathes where constant speed is required.
  • DC shunt motors are used in Blowers and fans
  • DC shunt motors are used in Reciprocating pumps.
