What is meant Inductor

An Inductor is a passive device that stores energy in the form of magnetic field and return it in the form of electrical energy. When a wire of certain length is twisted into a coil becomes a basic inductor. whenever, the current is made to pass through an inductor, an emf is formed. When the current passing through the inductor changes , the emf produced are also changes, this change in emf will induces a voltage across the coil according to Faradays's law of electromagnetic inductance. This induced voltage will reduces the current in the circuit , By len's law an inductor opposes the rate of change of current flowing through it due to the build up of self-induced emf within its magnetic field. The unit of inductance is henry denoted by H. Inductors are alse called as chokes. Inductors are of two types

  • air-core type
  • iron-core type

Low value inductors are made of air-core type. High value inductors are made of iron-core type.
