Norton's Theorem

Norton's theorem is an alternate method of analysing the circuit. Thevenin's theorem was used to simplify a network to a constant-voltage source and a series resistance. Whereas Norton's theorem was used to simplify a network to a constant-current source and a parallel resistance. The interchange of voltage to current and vice versa can be done using ohm's law.

Norton's Theorem Statement

Norton's theorem states that any two terminal linear network with current source, voltage sources and resistance can be replaced by an equivalent circuit consisting of a current source in parallel with a equivalent resistance.Then current passing through the load can be calculated using the formula.

Explanation

STEP 1:Calculate the short circuit current by removing the load RL and short circuiting the terminal A and B.

STEP 2:Calculate the total Resistance of the circuit, by short circuiting the battery.

STEP 3:Connect the load RL back across the terminals A and B from where it was temporarily removed earlier. Then the current through RL is given by
