Plugging of Electric Motors

The direction of rotation of an electric motor is dependent on several variable. Plugging of electric motor works fine for both AC machine and DC machine.

Plugging AC Machine

For AC machine, the phase sequence of the stator windings are one of the variable i.e) By interchanging any two supply terminals of RYB, the braking torque is produced, so that the direction of rotation of the rotating magnetic field is reversed with respect to the rotation of the motor. The electromagnetic torque developed provides the braking action and brings the rotor to a quick stop. This type of braking is also known as current braking or reverse current braking.

Plugging DC Machine

For DC machine, the polarities of the field or armature voltage is a variable i.e) The armature terminals are reversed while the motor is in operating condition. The supply voltage Va and the induced emf E acts in the same direction. The armature current is reversed, thereby producing a braking torque to stop the motor instantly.
