Self Inductance of a Coil

When a wire of certain length is twisted into a coil becomes a basic inductor. Consider a coil of N turns wound on a core of magnetic material i.e) iron core. When the alternating current i passes through the coil, the emf induced in the coil. This emf forms a magnetic field around the coil, this extends outwards from the wire or coil. This varying magnetic field is capable of inducing the voltage in nearby coil or wire, however it also couples with the coil from which it is set up.

How to increase self inductance rate

  • Using iron core which may be as high as 2000 times than that of relative permeability of air.
  • Length of the coil must be minimum.
  • Area of the coil should be maximum.
  • Number of turns must be maximum.
