Sources

What is meant by Source

A source is a device which feeds electrical energy to the circuit. E.g) Bicycle dynamo is said to be a source, as it converts mechanical enengy to electrical energy and then it feeds to the light in our bicycle. E.g) All batteries are said to be a source.

Different Types of Source

There are two types of sources. They are

  • Voltage Source
  • Current Source

What is Voltage Source

Voltage source is defined as the energy source which gives constant voltage across its load or terminals irrespective of current drawn by its load or terminals. In our day-to-day life we come across several voltage source such as mobile phone( ≅4V), batteries(12V) , router(12V), etc Voltage Source is represented by V

What is Current Source

Current source is defined as the energy source which gives constant current through the load or circuit irrespective of voltage drawn by its load or circuit. Current source are very rare in our day-to-day life. Few examples are photo electric cells, collector current in transistors. Current Source is represented by I

Why Voltage Sources are widely used

In electrical point of view, the load is nothing more than a resistance. By considering your house wire lining. All loads(fan, ac, washing machine etc) are connected in parallel. Because only in parallel connection, when any one of the load(says fan) get fused, all the other loads will continue to operate. Load (resistance) connected in parallel will have same voltage with different values of current. Therefore, the appliance designer will prefer voltage source more widely.
