Types of Transformers

Core Type Transformer

Core type transformers are popular in High voltage applications. In core type transformer, cores are surrounded by windings (core inside, winding outside). The general form of windings which surround the core is in the form of circular or oval or rectangular. Circular form of winding is the most preferable form because of their high mechanical strength. In fact, each winding in the trasformer are insulated from each other by using cooling ducts. The purpose of providing cooling ducts is to reducing eddy current losses.

Shell Type Transformer

Shell type transformers are popular in Low voltage applications. In shell type transformer, windings are surrounded by cores (winding inside, core outside). The general form of windings in shell type transformers are multi layer disc type usually wound in the form of pancakes. In fact, each multi layer discs are insulated from each other by paper. Berry Transformer is one of the most commonly used shell type transformer.
